Knowing that all kids learn in different ways, you’ve sought out examples of differentiated instruction to help each of your students as much as possible. Every kid in your class comes from a different background, has different interests and a different set of abilities and learning skills. These elements all affect how each child perceives the instruction you’re giving him and whether or not he retains the lessons. That means that you can have one lesson plan but must have a number of strategies formulated to know what is differentiated instruction and for helping your students reach the learning goals you’ve set for them.

Imbeau starts with the importance of knowing your students and determining their readiness and their interests. Standardized tests, work samples and quizzes are all useful for helping you familiarize yourself with your students’ readiness, but you must also look at their interests. This can be done through simple conversations during a sharing time or one-on-one with students. Or start a journal writing project at the beginning of the school year to not only help you get to know the kids in your classroom, but to monitor inevitable changes they’ll undergo throughout the year.

Once you have an understanding of your students, the other pieces fall into place. These are issues that you’re already familiar with such as the routines and structure of your classroom and the learning goals you have for your students within each subject. With these elements you can move onto implementing differentiated instruction such as learning centers, tiered assignments with supplemental activities, choice boards or interest-based learning tools such as orbitals.
